No data without stories, no stories without data

In collaboration with Northwestern Mutual Data Science Institute, Data You Can Use hosted Milwaukee’s 5th Data Day at Cream City Labs. Over 120 people attended from all over Milwaukee. Attendees included neighborhood champions, data scientists, government leaders, researchers, funders, students, and data visualization specialists.  Attendees shared innovative and informative projects.

The event was kicked off by Ms. Keri McConnell, the Executive Director of the Northwestern Mutual Data Science Institute and Dr. Katie Pritchard, the president of Data You Can Use.

Our keynote speaker, Aaron Williams of the Washington Post has granted permission for his presentation to be available on our website.  After his visit to Milwaukee, Aaron said:

“Just wanted to say thank you for inviting me out to Milwaukee for Data Day. It was inspiring to learn about the many people in Milwaukee who are working to better the community and who are providing information to the people who need it most.

I was also inspired by all the folks I met who are doing some very innovative and cutting-edge work across multiple disciplines. The event reminded me why this work is important and has given me a renewed focus on other stories I want to pursue next year.”

We would like to congratulate Anneliese Dickman from the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, and Antonio Butts from Walnut Way for being the 2019 Data Dream winners.  We look forward to hearing updates from both organizations at Data Day 2020!

A panel of local media professionals was moderated by Aaron Williams. The panel speakers gave examples and context of how data informs stories and decision-making in Milwaukee. The panel included: Ashley Luthern,  Milwaukee Journal Sentinel; Edgar Mendez, Milwaukee Neighborhood News Services; and Tarik Moody, Radio Milwaukee.  Urban Milwaukee published a release on the event.
