Youth Achievement in Milwaukee

In 2022, Data You Can Use came across an article posted by Child Trends, which took a different approach to addressing racial disparities in education and well-being. While acknowledging these disparities and barriers, the article choose to highlight the progress and accomplishments of Black children – celebrating their resilience instead of focusing on the continued challenges they face. Inspired by this article, Data You Can Use embarked on a project to highlight this success at a local level.

Black Youth Achievement

In 2023, we released our Black Youth Achievement report. This report examines the intersection of quantitative data with life experience as it affects Black youth in Milwaukee. Data was collected from the U.S. Census and the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction and shared with partners through small, focused conversations called “data chats”. Data chats provide an opportunity for those most affected and closest to the data to discuss how the data reflects their unique experiences and to consider possible solutions for issues. Check out the full report to see what themes around Black Youth Achievement in Milwaukee were uncovered over the course of eight data chats.

Latine Youth Achievement

Inspired by the process and findings of the Black Youth Achievement project, Dr. Gabriel Velez from Marquette University’s Black and Latino/a Ecosystem and Support Transition (BLEST Hub) approached Data You Can Use with an interest in continuing the project with a lens on Latine youth in the city.

In the Fall of 2024, DYCU and the BLEST Hub convened nine data chats to discuss bright spots in the data on Latine youth in Milwaukee.  The data chats were hosted by nine local partners whose work centers on or intersects with Latine youth, and facilitated by staff from DYCU and the BLEST Hub. Check out the full report – available in English and in Spanish – which details the themes uncovered from the data chat conversations.
